The Graduate Program in Linguistics and Literature (PPGL) has emerged as the result of a movement throughout decades in the field of Languages and Literature at University of Passo Fundo. The Undergraduate Course of Languages and Literature was created in 1957.

In the beginning, with two areas of concentration – “Linguistic Studies and Literary Studies” – it was recommended by the Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel (CAPES) in March 2003. The official recommendation happened after a relevant context of activities connected with teaching, research and extension involve the trajectory of professors who would later join the PPGL/UPF.

In 2011, through a curricular reform, the PPGL unified its areas of concentration, “Linguistic Studies and Literary Studies” into one area only: Linguistics and Literature. Such change was the consequence of new national politics of evaluation implemented by CAPES for the areas of Linguistics, Languages and Literature and the internal need of the Program in order to build its identity from a context of several activities. In its new format, the PPGL is composed of three research lines:

  • Production and Reception of Literary Text;
  • Reading and Reader Education;
  • Constitution and Interpretation of Text and Discourse.

The Graduate Program in Linguistics and Literature of the University of Passo Fundo was recommended by CAPES in 2003 and in its very first evaluation, the triennial Evaluation/CAPES 2007, it scored 4.  In the following triennial, in the triennial Evaluation 2010, the PPGL/UPF kept its score, what qualifies it among the programs in the area of Linguistics, Languages and Literature in the State of Rio Grande do Sul and Brazil.

In December 2013, the Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel (CAPES) authorized the operation of the Doctorate Program in Linguistics and Literature with the concentration area in “Languages and Literature, Reading and Discursive Production”, maintaining its  Research Lines, as follows:

  • Production and Reception of Literary Text;
  • Reading and Reader Education;
  • Constitution and Interpretation of Text and Discourse.

It is relevant to point out the accomplishment of the Literary Conventions in the history of the Program. They begin in 1981, under the coordination of Professor Tania Rösing, PhD, a current member of the faculty of the PPGL and they were in their 10th edition when the Program started to operate. The Literary Conventions are composed of conferences, debates and courses, involving writers, artists and intellectuals, who address themes in the fields of Literature and Linguistics, among other cultural aspects.  Besides these activities, the Conventions organize concerts, expositions, plays, films exhibitions, etc., reaching, in each edition, about 30.000 people. Since 1999, Jornadinha da Literatura, a special program dedicated to fundamental and high school students, has been part of the Conventions.  In each edition, it gets together about 17.000 young people in colorful tents, making the contact among children and young people, writers and artists possible.  The trajectory of the Conventions of Passo Fundo has guided permanent actions, which resulted from continuous effort in favor of readers’ education. In 1997, among these results, the Center of Literature Reference and Multimedia, a multimedia-reading laboratory, was founded. This place, known as the Reading World, has become part of the Program after the implementation of the PPGL.
